- Home and Away, the soap where Hemsworth began his career, is set in the fictional coastal town of Summer Bay. Its outdoor scenes are filmed at Palm Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches, where visitors often gather to watch. The show has run since 1988 and is broadcast in many countries.
- Chris Hemsworth appeared in the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters as Kevin, a friendly but hopeless receptionist. The comic role surprised many viewers who knew him mainly as an action hero. A year later, Thor: Ragnarok built its version of the character on that same comic side.
- Hemsworth's Netflix action film Extraction became one of the streaming service's most watched original films after its release in 2020. Its success led to a sequel in 2023, which included a long action sequence designed to look like it was filmed in one continuous take.
The career of Chris Hemsworth
Chris Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1983, and spent part of his childhood in the Northern Territory before his family settled on Phillip Island in Victoria. He is one of three brothers who became actors: his older brother Luke and his younger brother Liam also work in film and television. After his years on Australian television, he moved to Los Angeles and built a career that mixes blockbusters, true stories and action films.
From Australian TV to Hollywood
Like many Australian actors, Hemsworth learned his craft on long-running television, where actors film many scenes a day and have little time to rehearse. His small but memorable part in Star Trek in 2009 led to more auditions in the United States. Casting directors noticed that he could combine physical presence with humour, a mix that later shaped his most famous role. He also appeared in films such as Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012.
Becoming Thor
Hemsworth first played Thor, the Norse-inspired god of thunder from Marvel comics, in 2011, and returned to the role in the Avengers films. Early films presented Thor as a serious hero from the realm of Asgard. With Thor: Ragnarok, the character became much funnier, partly because the director encouraged improvisation on set. The change was popular with audiences and critics, and it showed that Hemsworth's comic timing could carry a large action film.
Beyond the superhero roles
Outside Marvel, Hemsworth has often chosen roles based on real events or very physical challenges. He worked twice with the director Ron Howard, on Rush and In the Heart of the Sea. In the Netflix film Extraction he played a mercenary in long action scenes filmed to look like single continuous shots. He has also presented Limitless, a documentary series about ageing and human endurance, and co-founded Centr, a fitness and wellbeing app.
